Raiders Request Second Bye Week
(October 30, 2002 - nonewswire.com) The Oakland Raiders today petitioned the NFL with a request for a second bye week.

Commenting on the petition, Raiders wide receiver Jerry Rice said, "A lot of us players are older and we need to rest more than other teams; therefore we are simply asking to have another week of rest."

Oakland coach Bill Callahan stressed in his petition that the Raiders players, on average, are 15 years older than the average age of other teams players. Thus he thinks it only fair that they get an extra week to rest.

"Some of our guys are on oxygen," says Callahan. "If the NFL is concerned about the health of its players, then it will allow us to have an additional bye week."

The Raiders have requested to have Monday, November 11 off when they are scheduled to play the Broncos. When asked how the games would be rescheduled, Callahan commented that they would do a double-header the following Sunday, playing both the Broncos and Patriots or a mix of both teams.

The NFL is said to be seriously considering the proposal due to its concern with the Raiders age, with some players already eligible for Social Security benefits.

Reason for Satire:
The Raiders have one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, yet are constantly being challenged by sports writers on the average older age of its team players. Thus this article was put together as a parody of the team's age. Joking aside, though, the Raiders have shown an amazing talent with such an aged group as indicated in
this USA Today article.
