Disney Puts Angels Rally Monkey Up For Sale - Bengals Interested!
(November 9, 2002 - digitalmediafx.com) Trying to capitalize on the success of the Disney-owned Anaheim Angels, Disney announced this week that it is selling the Angels "Rally Monkey" to the highest-bidding sports team. The "Rally Monkey" is credited with helping the Angels to an amazing season that resulted in them being the 2002 World Series Champions.

NFL's Cincinnati Bengals (1 win and 7 losses) have expressed a strong interest in purchasing the "Rally Monkey" and promised not to put it in the same cage with their Bengal Tiger that currently appears at games.

Nonewswire.com has learned that the Bengals have offered $21 million and 50 cents for the monkey and will consider petitioning the NFL to change their name to the "Cincinnati Rally Monkeys" if the purchase goes through. The Bengals would also get rid of their tiger, which they say was not potty trained.

Players on the Anaheim Angels are upset that Disney is selling their rally mascot.

"They should be more worried that we are selling their team than about us selling their monkey," says Disney CEO Michael Eisner. "This is no funny monkey-business here. I am working to increase Disney profits and shareholder value at all costs. However, after we sell the Angels, I would be more than happy to license them the rights to a Rally Mouse based on our Mickey character."

At one time Disney did consider keeping the Angels, but laying off most of the players like they did with their animation division in 2001. Major League Baseball rejected that restructuring plan, however, by letting Disney know it still had to have nine players on the field for games versus their restructured plan of putting only four players on the field.

NHL's Mighty Ducks also expressed an interest in purchasing the Rally Monkey, but Disney rejected the offer stating that because they own the Mighty Ducks too (another team Disney is trying to sell), it would be the equivalent of selling the monkey to itself.

Reason for Satire:
Disney is going ahead with plans to sell the Anaheim Angels, despite the Angels being the 2002 World Series Champions, recognizing that the stature of the Angels only makes the team more valuable. With Disney stock at an 8 year low, the company continues to deploy hard nosed "business" tactics that seem to destroy its stature (i.e. killing off most of its animation division, thus allowing rivals to surpass them in that genre). Disney use to be about "magic" which was the driving force behind sales, but over the past several years much of the magic has disappeared. When was the last time a new ride was opened at Disneyland? Disney's California Adventure has failed so far because it lacks "Disney magic". Thus this satire is based on Disney's apparent philosophy to "get the most out of every dollar" versus "providing magic that delivers happier customers, which results in increased profits."
